Wedding Anniversary Gifts by Year | Sentimental Prints

The first anniversary, you're still learning what they actually like. The 25th, you know every preference but something genuinely new is hard to find. Each year carries its own weight, which is exactly why the traditional material list has survived as long as it has. This guide covers the milestone years, what each material means, and what to give when you want something worth hanging. For a gift matched to the year, see our personalised watercolour anniversary prints.
Why the anniversary year still matters
The traditional gift list, paper, cotton, leather, crystal and so on up to gold, wasn't invented by a stationer. It emerged from the idea that each material reflects something about a marriage at that stage: fragile and new in the early years, more enduring and precious as it matures.
That framework is still useful. It gives a gift meaning beyond "I wasn't sure what to get." A first-anniversary paper gift isn't sentimental because it's paper, it's sentimental because paper is deliberately fragile, and you chose to put something important on it anyway.
The entries below cover the years most people are searching for, with traditional and modern alternatives. Watercolour print ideas are noted where they fit the year's meaning honestly, not forced into every entry.
1st anniversary, Paper
Paper is the tradition, and a watercolour portrait made from a wedding-day photo fits the year precisely: it carries the image from the day itself, printed on premium paper and ready to hang.
A print of the wedding venue, the first dance, or simply the two of you, reimagined in watercolour, lands because the material and the year are the same answer.
A personalised wedding watercolour, best for the couple who wants the day back on the wall
Our personalised wedding gifts include watercolour portraits from a favourite wedding photo, from £34.95 as a print or from £64.95 framed. Sizes run from 21 × 29.7cm up to 45 × 60cm; wood frames in black, white or natural add £30. You'll see a free digital proof before anything prints, nothing goes to production until you approve it.
Good photos for this: ceremony shots with natural light, portraits of the two of you where faces are clearly visible, venue exteriors with architectural detail.
The modern alternative for year one is a clock. If you want the same symbolism with more warmth, a watercolour of a meaningful place covers both.
5th anniversary, Wood
Five years is long enough to know what you've built together. Wood is solid and warm; it has been through something.
A couples watercolour portrait, naturally framed, best for the 5th
A watercolour from a favourite photo of the two of them, a recent holiday, a moment at home, the day they moved in, in a natural wood frame. From £34.95 as a print, from £64.95 framed. Browse our personalised gifts for couples.
10th anniversary, Tin or Aluminium (traditional) / Diamond (modern)
A decade together feels like a number that deserves more than something functional, which is why the modern tradition shifted to diamond, the hardest material.
For a couple with children, a family watercolour portrait captures where they are at the ten-year mark in a way nothing else does: the family they've built, not just the couple they started as.
A large watercolour family portrait, best for the 10th
Browse our anniversary gifts for a family watercolour portrait at 45 × 60cm with a wood frame, from £94.95 framed. Free digital proof included; you'll see the reimagined portrait before we print.
15th anniversary, Crystal
Crystal suggests clarity and light. Fifteen years is long enough to see each other clearly, habits, history, the whole picture, and choose it anyway.
A watercolour of a place that matters to both of them works well here: the house they bought, the town where they met, or the first place they travelled together. It anchors the gift in shared geography rather than a face, which some couples will prefer at this stage. Pair it with a handwritten note about why you chose that place. The print is the object; the note is the meaning.
20th anniversary, China (traditional) / Platinum (modern)
Two decades. Platinum is rare, lasting and resistant to tarnish, which is a generous way to describe a 20-year marriage.
A watercolour portrait of the family as it stands now: grown children, a beloved dog, a home they've made their own. Our personalised family gifts include multi-subject watercolour portraits where the artist reimagines a group photo as a single cohesive piece. The proof step matters for a group shot, you want to see it before it prints.
25th anniversary, Silver
The silver anniversary is the one everyone knows about. It's the first milestone that carries genuine cultural weight, people throw parties for it. A scented candle won't do it.
A large, framed watercolour portrait at the silver anniversary is a genuine keepsake: something the couple will still have at the 50th. A white wood frame honours the year without being literal about it.
A large, framed watercolour portrait, best for the 25th
A 45 × 60cm watercolour portrait in a white wood frame, from a photo that matters to them, printed on premium paper and framed ready to hang. From £94.95. See our anniversary gifts and start with your favourite photo.
For a wedding-focused gift, perhaps from children or close friends buying for the couple, a print of the original wedding venue is a quiet nod to where it all started. Our personalised wedding gifts work well here.
40th anniversary, Ruby
The ruby anniversary marks 40 years. Deep, warm, enduring, and the gift should feel proportionate.
A large, framed family portrait has genuine resonance at the 40th: it shows not just the couple but the whole story they've built. Grandchildren, children, a home that has seen decades. A watercolour softens the photograph without losing its subjects; it becomes something worth hanging rather than filing.
A multi-generation family watercolour portrait, best for the 40th
A family watercolour at 45 × 60cm, framed in black or natural wood, from a group photo. From £94.95 framed. For something centred on the couple themselves, a portrait of just the two of them at this stage is equally fitting.
50th anniversary, Gold
Fifty years is genuinely rare. Gold is the material because nothing else is proportionate, and a large framed watercolour portrait, the whole family, or just the couple, is the gift the occasion asks for. Frame it in natural wood; the warmth of the wood against the watercolour palette sits differently at this milestone than black or white.
Couples watercolour portrait, best for the 50th
A 45 × 60cm watercolour portrait from a favourite photo, in a natural wood frame. From £94.95 framed. See our personalised gifts for couples or browse the anniversary gifts collection. Nothing prints until you've approved the proof.
How to choose the right print for any anniversary year
The photo matters most. A well-lit photo where faces are clearly visible, natural light preferred, phones fine, gives the artist the best material to work from. You'll always see a free digital proof before we print.
Size and frame by occasion weight. For early anniversaries (1st–5th), a 21 × 29.7cm or 30 × 40cm print is often right. For the milestone years (10th, 25th, 40th, 50th), a 45 × 60cm framed print is proportionate. Frames are wood only, black, white or natural, and add £30 to any size.
Order with time. Order at least a week before the anniversary: proof exchange, approval, print and dispatch. The proof isn't something to rush, and neither are you.

The right anniversary gift is the one that reflects what the year actually means. A watercolour portrait made from a photo you already love, printed and framed for the wall, is the kind of object that stays.

Frequently asked questions
What is the traditional gift for a first wedding anniversary?
Paper, which is why a personalised watercolour print, artist-reimagined from your wedding photo and printed on premium paper, fits so precisely. The modern alternative is a clock, but a print lasts considerably longer than either.
Can I order an anniversary print from an old or scanned photograph?
Yes. Older photos and scanned prints often work well for a watercolour reimagining, the artist-reimagined style is forgiving of grain and imperfection. The free digital proof lets you see the result before committing; if the source photo isn't working, you'll see that at proof stage and can provide an alternative.
What sizes and frames are available?
Three sizes: 21 × 29.7cm, 30 × 40cm and 45 × 60cm. All available as a print only or framed in wood, black, white or natural, for £30 more. Print-only from £34.95; the largest framed size is £94.95. No silver or gold frames are available.
How does the free digital proof work?
Once you've placed your order, an artist reimagines your photo as a watercolour portrait. You receive a digital proof by email before anything is printed. Approve it as-is or request adjustments, nothing goes to print until you're happy with it.
Can I send the anniversary gift directly to the recipient?
Yes. Enter a different delivery address at checkout and the print ships straight to them. Framed prints arrive carefully packaged and are ready to present as-is, so direct delivery works well for surprise gifts.
